Selecting Things
Selecting items in Eagle sometimes takes one click, and sometimes takes two. A group of densely packed items will cause Eagle to highlight what it thinks you want to select. A second click will confirm your selection, right click will select the next nearest item and Esc will cancel selection.
Right click comes in useful when you want to select a trace underneath another one.
Groups
To move or manipulate more than one object in Eagle, use the group
command.
The group
command works in both Schematic and Board view. You can type into the command-bar as just gro
and it will let you either:
- Drag a selection box around objects,
- Draw an irregular selection line by line, or
- Group everything with
gro all
To start a selection box, type gro
, hit enter then click and drag over the objects you want to select.
To draw an irregular selection, type gro
, hit enter and then click somewhere. Your next click will draw a line from there, and so on until you have a selection. Double-click to finish your selection.
Manipulating Groups
Eagle has myriad ways to trip up beginners. Once you've grouped some objects you must use CTRL+Right-Click (CMD+Right-Click on a Mac) to apply the current command.
For example, you might:
- Type
gro
and hit enter - Select your items
- Type
mov
and hit enter - Hold CTRL, then right-click and drag your items to move them
